In the past 25 years, mist propagation has become an important technique in the rooting of many cuttings. Mist reduces the rate of transpiration so that water, which is important for cell growth, is retained within the cuttings so that new roots can be initiated and grow. But the constant washing of plant foliage by water from the mist enables nutrients to be leached from within the plant tissue. There are numerous accounts in the literature that leaching does occur from cuttings as they root under mist, but the majority of these reports are concerned with fruit and tropical plants. Since many ornamental plants are normally propagated as cuttings under mist, this study was directed at observing the extent of nutrient leaching from cuttings of common ornamental plants as they rooted under mist.
